The rudder enables a ship to maintain its course or change direction. The steering effect on the ship is achieved by the rudder in the propulsion and propeller flow.
The steering forces that act when the rudder is in place result from the pressure distribution around the rudder blade, which today is predominantly a teardrop shape. The optimal rudder angle at which the rudder achieves its maximum rudder force is - depending on the shape of the rudder blade - around 35-38°.
