The propulsion power of a ship is negatively affected if the propeller performance deteriorates, e.g. by cavitation erosion and pollution, impact attack and corrosion. To minimize corrosion, propellers are cast from corrosion-resistant materials such as superston and potassium. Marine growth, such as algae, barnacles, etc. on the propeller and ship's hull can also have negative effects on the propulsion power and lead to a loss of performance and speed.
Cleaning during regular docking in the shipyard and in between with divers improves the performance of a ship. In addition, the application of coatings with special characteristics prevents and reduces the adhesion of organisms.
