COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers announced the latest additions to its fleet with the commissioning of three new multipurpose pulp vessels, enhancing its service capabilities. The new vessels include the sister ships COSCO SHIPPING JI XIANG and COSCO SHIPPING RU YI, both of which are 62,000 DWT multipurpose pulp carriers, and the larger GREEN MUNGUBA, which was celebrated in a naming ceremony on August 22, 2024 at the COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) shipyard.
COSCO SHIPPING JI XIANG and COSCO SHIPPING RU YI each measure 201.8 meters in length and 32.26 meters in width, with a cargo capacity of 72,000 cubic meters. These vessels are designed to meet the latest environmental standards and offer advanced temperature monitoring systems to ensure optimal operational safety.
The GREEN MUNGUBA, the largest pulp vessel globally at 77,000 DWT, is distinguished by its considerable dimensions of 225 meters in length and 32.26 meters in width, with a draft of 14.5 meters when fully loaded. It boasts a cargo capacity of 88,600 cubic meters. This vessel is equipped with cutting-edge energy-saving and environmentally friendly technology, complying with NOx TIER III emission standards. Its maiden voyage will commence from China to South America.The integration of these state-of-the-art vessels signifies COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers’ commitment to advancing its fleet and expanding its global service network.

In a significant expansion of its fleet, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers has commissioned four 9,000-tonne special liquid cargo ships from Mawei Shipyard, a subsidiary of Fujian Shipbuilding. This procurement, managed through COSCO's wholly-owned Hong Kong-based subsidiary, COSCO Shipping Investment Development, is aimed at bolstering the company’s capabilities in asphalt transport.
The total investment for the acquisition is estimated at $98 million, with each vessel costing approximately $24.5 million. The new ships are scheduled for delivery between October 2025 and August 2026, reinforcing COSCO's commitment to enhancing its specialized cargo services within a well-defined timeline. COSCO Shipping has indicated that the internal rate of return (IRR) for this project is projected to be around 7.2%. Furthermore, the anticipated investment payback period stands at 11.8 years, highlighting a sound financial strategy and a focus on long-term returns.This strategic initiative reflects COSCO’s dedication to strengthening its position in the specialized shipping sector. The addition of these advanced vessels is expected to enhance the company’s operational efficiency and market competitiveness, ensuring sustained growth and an expanded service offering in the asphalt transportation industry.

This vessel, part of a new class of the world’s largest pulp carriers, is specifically engineered for the transportation of pulp.The COSCO Shipping Speciliazed Carrier, GREEN ITAJAI boasts impressive dimensions: 225 meters in length, 32.26 meters in width, and a draft of 14.5 meters when fully loaded. It has a total hold capacity of 88,600 cubic meters and is equipped with four heavy-duty cranes, each capable of lifting up to 300 tons, ensuring operational efficiency and enhanced performance.
