On November 28, the LNG-powered car carrier Pontus Highway was delivered to Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. by China Merchants Jinling Shipbuilding (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd. Designed to transport up to 7,000 vehicles, this state-of-the-art vessel is a testament to advancements in sustainable shipping technology.
The Pontus Highway is the second vessel in its series, following the delivery of its sister ship, Nereus Highway, in August 2024. Powered by LNG, the ship significantly reduces environmental pollutants, cutting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 25–30%, sulfur oxides (SOx) by almost 100%, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by approximately 75%. These reductions ensure compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) NOx Tier 3 standards.
A standout feature of the vessel is its WinGD 7X62DF-2.1 iCER dual-fuel engine, which not only operates on LNG but also incorporates technology to curb methane emissions. This innovation highlights the industry’s focus on addressing challenges associated with LNG fuel use. With the Pontus Highway, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha reinforces its commitment to environmental stewardship and aligns with global efforts to decarbonize the shipping industry. This delivery marks another milestone in the transition toward more sustainable maritime operations.
