Chinese Maritime Transport (CMT), a prominent shipping company based in Taiwan, has announced plans to expand its dry bulk fleet by commissioning up to four newcastlemax vessels from a local shipbuilder. The company has entered into an agreement with Taiwan’s CSBC Corporation for the construction of two 210,000 dwt (deadweight tonnage) newbuilds, with an option to order two additional vessels. Further details on the delivery timeline are expected as the contract progresses.
CMT is actively pursuing this expansion to strengthen its presence in the global dry bulk market. The Newcastlemax vessels, known for their substantial cargo-carrying capacity, are expected to play a key role in enhancing the company’s operational efficiency and meeting growing demand for bulk commodities such as coal and iron ore. While the specific delivery dates for the new vessels have not yet been disclosed, CMT has confirmed that CSBC Corporation is pricing the newcastlemax units between $76 million and $79.8 million each. This investment underscores CMT's commitment to fleet modernization and increasing capacity in line with global trade demands.
