Fjord1 has taken a significant step forward in maritime innovation with the start of construction on the world’s first autonomous ferries at Tersan Shipyard. On Friday, October 11, steel cutting for the first vessel marked the official commencement of this pioneering project. These ferries, designed to operate on the Lavik-Oppedal route, will be the first globally to function entirely autonomously, requiring no human intervention.

The autonomous technology incorporated into the vessels will manage all aspects of their operation, from departing the dock to crossing the fjord and docking at the destination, as well as handling both onboard and onshore logistics. Fjord1’s new control center in Florø will oversee the ferries’ operation, ensuring both safety and efficiency throughout their journeys. The ferries, being built at Tersan Shipyard, are scheduled for delivery by the first half of 2026. This project underscores Fjord1's commitment to leading the way in autonomous maritime solutions, reflecting the company’s vision for a more efficient and technologically advanced future in ferry transportation.
