Greece's Horizon Tankers is poised to enhance its MR fleet with the addition of up to six newbuilds in China. Under the leadership of Anthony Comninos, the company has entered into a contract with Zhoushan Changhong International Shipyard for the construction of four 50,000 dwt chemical/product carriers, with deliveries slated to commence in the second half of 2026. While the shipyard has not disclosed the pricing details, industry sources estimate the cost to be upwards of $45 million per vessel. The agreement also includes options for two additional units, which can be exercised at a later date.
This move marks Horizon Tankers' return to newbuild orders, the last of which were placed in 2014 when the company ordered two MRs from South Korea’s Sungdong Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering. Established in 2007 and headquartered in Piraeus, Horizon Tankers currently operates a fleet comprising four suezmaxes and eight MR2s, as listed on its official website. This strategic expansion aligns with the company's ongoing efforts to modernize and enlarge its fleet, reinforcing its position in the competitive tanker market. The acquisition of these new vessels underscores Horizon Tankers' commitment to growth and operational excellence in the chemical and product carrier sector.
