Danish towage operator Svitzer has commissioned the construction of the world’s first battery-methanol powered tug, in collaboration with Turkish shipyard Uzmar. The vessel will incorporate the innovative TRAnsverse tug design, combining a 6MW battery with dual-fuel methanol engines to ensure both power and operational range. This marks a significant step forward in sustainable marine operations, leveraging hybrid technology to minimize emissions.
Set for deployment in the Port of Gothenburg by the second half of 2025, the new tug will perform over 90% of its operations using its battery-electric powertrain. Additionally, it will be utilized for escort duties, contributing to up to 25% of operations within the port. The dual-fuel methanol engines will serve as a backup and range extender, ensuring operational reliability.
Svitzer's initiative reflects a broader push toward sustainable solutions in the maritime industry, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and enhance the efficiency of port operations. The company’s commitment to integrating green technologies represents a pioneering move in the transition toward cleaner towage and port services worldwide.
