CMA CGM is reportedly the European company behind a substantial ship order placed in South Korea. On July 15, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Samho announced a significant contract valued at $2.67 billion for the construction of 12 LNG dual-fueled 15,500 TEU vessels. According to brokers, these ships are being built for CMA CGM.The order is evenly split between the two shipyards, with each yard responsible for six newbuilds, all scheduled for delivery by 2028.
This substantial order increases CMA CGM's newbuild backlog to over 1 million TEU slots, positioning the company second only to Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) in terms of fleet expansion. With this addition, CMA CGM is on course to surpass Maersk in the global liner rankings, marking a significant shift in the maritime shipping industry. This move underscores CMA CGM's commitment to expanding its fleet with environmentally friendly, LNG-fueled vessels, aligning with global trends towards sustainability in shipping. The investment also reflects the company's strategic ambition to enhance its capacity and competitiveness in the global market.
