Japanese shipping giant Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has taken a significant step toward sustainable maritime operations by ordering two ammonia dual-fuel bulk carriers. This investment aligns with MOL’s broader strategy to embrace alternative fuels and support the decarbonization of the global shipping industry.

The advanced vessels, each boasting a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 210,000, will be constructed at Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding in China. Valued at $93 million per unit, these bulk carriers reflect MOL's commitment to integrating eco-friendly technologies into its fleet. According to Intermodal, the vessels are expected to be delivered between 2027 and 2028.

Ammonia has emerged as a promising alternative fuel due to its potential to achieve net-zero emissions. MOL’s adoption of this technology underscores the company’s forward-thinking approach to addressing environmental challenges in maritime transport. The initiative supports the shipping industry's global transition toward more sustainable practices and compliance with stricter environmental regulations.
