The Caroussis family-controlled shipowner and operator, Chios Navigation, has announced significant expansion plans for its tanker fleet, contracting two Medium Range (MR) newbuilds in South Korea. According to broker reports, the Piraeus-based company has entered into agreements with Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding for the construction of two conventionally fueled, scrubber-fitted units, each with a deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 50,000.

These newbuilds are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2027, with the total cost just exceeding $100 million, as per the latest stock exchange filing in Korea. The addition of these tankers will enhance Chios Navigation's capacity and operational capabilities, reinforcing its position in the global shipping market.Chios Navigation currently owns a diversified fleet comprising five bulk carriers and three tankers, with an average fleet age of 11 years. This strategic investment in newbuilds reflects the company's commitment to modernizing its fleet and adhering to environmental regulations through the use of scrubber technology, which reduces sulfur emissions from conventional fuels. In addition to the MR tankers, Chios Navigation has also been associated with a handysize bulker newbuild project at Imabari Shipbuilding in Japan, signaling the company's continued growth and diversification in the maritime sector.
