Greek shipping company Danaos has expanded its newbuilding program to 18 vessels with a new order this year. Led by John Coustas, Danaos has reportedly contracted four 9,000 TEU ships with China’s state-run Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co (DSIC), according to newbuilding sources. Danish brokerage MB Shipbrokers, formerly Maersk Broker, indicated that the quartet, costing around $416 million, will be conventionally fueled and delivered between 2027 and 2028.

Earlier in February and March 2024, Danaos added four 8,258 TEU newbuilds to its orderbook, with expected deliveries in 2026 and 2027. By the end of March, the company had 14 boxships under construction with a combined capacity of approximately 108,000 TEU, two of which were delivered in April and May. These vessels, forward fixed with advanced eco-friendly designs, will be methanol fuel-ready.The containership market has seen a surge in orders this year, driven by a rebound in spot rates to near the highest levels seen outside the boom during the COVID-19 pandemic.
