On July 18, 2024, a ceremony marked the commencement of construction for a groundbreaking new ship, with Chinese Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding contracted for the project. This ship is the first in a series of seven new Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs) ordered by Grimaldi for its expanding fleet. These state-of-the-art vessels will be equipped with advanced electronic engines, designed to offer low specific fuel consumption, and feature sophisticated emission reduction systems. These innovations ensure compliance with stringent international standards for CO2, NOx, and SOx emissions, as highlighted by Grimaldi.

Significantly, the new car carriers have received the ammonia-ready class notation from RINA, certifying their capability to be converted for zero-carbon ammonia fuel usage in the future. This forward-thinking certification positions Grimaldi at the forefront of sustainable maritime practices.Furthermore, the vessels are engineered for cold ironing, enabling them to utilize shoreside electricity supply as a green alternative to traditional fossil fuels. This feature underscores Grimaldi's commitment to environmental sustainability and aligns with global efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of the shipping industry. The initiation of this construction project not only represents a milestone for Grimaldi but also signals a significant advancement in the evolution of environmentally friendly maritime transportation.
