Hanwha Ocean, a leading shipbuilder specializing in floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs), has announced the securing of a new contract from an undisclosed Asian client. The agreement, valued at approximately $413 million, was confirmed on Tuesday. While Hanwha Ocean has not publicly named the client, industry sources have indicated that the Tokyo-based shipping conglomerate, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), is likely the entity behind the order.

The project is set to expand Hanwha Ocean’s expertise in the FSRU sector, where it already has experience in delivering 12 similar units. According to the contract details, the newly ordered FSRU is slated for completion and delivery by October 2027. Upon delivery, the unit is expected to enter into a long-term charter agreement with Singapore LNG, a state-controlled terminal operator that plays a key role in the region's energy infrastructure.

The deal, if confirmed to involve MOL, would reinforce the Japanese shipping giant’s strategic investments in LNG-related assets. This move aligns with MOL’s broader objectives to expand its footprint in the global LNG market and support the growing demand for cleaner energy solutions in the Asia-Pacific region.

TOKYO, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), announced the completion of the Green Winds, a 63,896 DWT Ultramax bulk carrier, on July 10. This vessel, built by Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. is equipped with the Wind Challenger hard sail wind power propulsion system. MOL Drybulk Ltd., an MOL Group company led by President and CEO Koichi Hirata and based in Minato-ku, Tokyo, will operate the new vessel.

The Green Winds is the second in a series of nine MOL Group vessels that will feature the Wind Challenger system, marking it as the world's first crane vessel equipped with this technology. The Wind Challenger, co-developed by MOL and Oshima Shipbuilding, utilizes telescoping hard sails to convert wind energy into propulsive force, potentially reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 7% to 16%, contingent on the ship route and operational conditions.

Aligned with the "MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2," MOL aims to achieve net zero GHG emissions by 2050. Key strategies include the adoption of energy-saving technologies, with plans to launch 25 vessels equipped with the Wind Challenger by 2030 and 80 vessels by 2035. MOL Group is committed to expanding its environmentally friendly fleet, integrating wind propulsion technology across diverse ship types to enhance safe management and efficient operation, thereby contributing to the decarbonization of the maritime industry and society at large.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has entered into a time charter contract for two dual-fuel very large gas carriers (VLGCs) with Chartering and Shipping Services (CSSA), a subsidiary of TotalEnergies. The agreement was facilitated through MOL's subsidiary, MOL Energia. The vessels will be constructed by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries in South Korea, with delivery scheduled for 2026. Designed to operate on both liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and conventional heavy oil, the dual-fuel technology significantly enhances environmental performance. When fueled by LPG, the vessels are expected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 20%, and sulfur oxides (SOx), particulate matter (PM), and other pollutants by about 90%, compared to traditional heavy oil.Additionally, the ships are equipped to transport ammonia, a next-generation clean energy source that emits no CO2 during combustion. This capability positions MOL to meet the anticipated rise in demand for ammonia as a sustainable energy solution.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Unveils 'BLUE' Series: Pioneering LNG-Fueled Car Carriers

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has taken a bold step towards sustainable shipping with the introduction of its revolutionary 'BLUE' series, a fleet of LNG-fueled car carriers designed to significantly reduce environmental impact while ensuring efficient maritime transport. The unveiling ceremony for the first vessel of the series was held on March 13 at Onishi Shipyard, marking a momentous occasion in Japan's maritime industry.

MOL's decision to select liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the primary fuel for its car carriers reflects the company's commitment to environmental stewardship and carbon footprint reduction. By opting for LNG, MOL aims to achieve substantial emissions reductions, with anticipated decreases of approximately 25-30 percent in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, 98 percent in sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions, and 85 percent in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions compared to conventional fuel oil-powered vessels.

In addition to its environmental benefits, the 'BLUE' series represents a strategic rebranding effort by MOL, aligning with the company's corporate mission of sustaining people's lives and ensuring a prosperous future. The new name symbolizes MOL's dedication to leveraging the vast blue oceans for the betterment of society and emphasizes its commitment to sustainable shipping practices.

Last year, MOL unveiled the new name and hull color design for its LNG-fueled car carriers, laying the groundwork for the 'BLUE' series. This innovative initiative underscores MOL's leadership in promoting green shipping technologies and advancing the maritime industry towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.
