SANMAR has initiated construction on four electric battery-powered tugs for Türkiye’s state-owned BOTAŞ Petroleum Pipeline Corporation, marking a significant advancement in sustainable maritime technology. The steel-cutting ceremony, held on October 11th at SANMAR’s cutting-edge Altinova Shipyard, marks the beginning of this pioneering project.

The tugs, identified by hull numbers 379, 380, 381, and 382, are designed under the ElectRA 2500-SX model, developed in collaboration with Canadian naval architects Robert Allan Ltd. Each tug will feature an impressive bollard pull of 70 tonnes and achieve speeds of up to 12 knots. With accommodations for up to eight crew members, the vessels will combine cutting-edge environmental standards with practical functionality.

A key feature of these tugs is their battery banks, capable of storing 5,085 kWh of energy. To enhance endurance and fire-fighting capabilities, the tugs will be equipped with backup diesel gensets. The vessels will also carry 54m³ of fuel oil and 18m³ of fresh water.

This project represents SANMAR’s latest innovation in the ElectRA Series, developed in collaboration with Corvus Energy and Robert Allan Ltd, pushing the boundaries of low-emission maritime solutions.
