CNG Tankers
CNG tankers, also known as compressed natural gas tankers, are cargo ships that transport compressed natural gas (CNG) in high-pressure containers. These vessels are specially designed to ensure the safe and efficient transport of CNG across long distances.
Size and Capacity
CNG tankers come in different sizes, ranging from small vessels of around 50 meters in length to larger vessels of over 130 meters in length. The typical deadweight tonnage (DWT) of a CNG tanker ranges from 1,000 to over 10,000 tonnes. The cargo capacity of a CNG tanker varies depending on its size and design, but it can range from a few hundred cubic meters to over 4,000 cubic meters.
Speed and Maneuverability
CNG tankers are designed for good maneuverability and seakeeping performance, which allows them to operate safely and efficiently in various weather conditions. They typically have a top speed of around 16-20 knots, which is sufficient for most CNG transport operations.
Maximum Draft and Cargo Handling Equipment
The maximum draft of a CNG tanker is typically around 8-10 meters, which allows it to navigate in shallow waters. CNG tankers are equipped with specialized cargo handling equipment, such as compressors, storage tanks, and safety systems, to safely and efficiently load, transport, and discharge compressed natural gas.
Shipbuilders and Countries of Origin
There are several shipyards around the world that specialize in the construction of CNG tankers, including:
- Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (South Korea)
- Samsung Heavy Industries (South Korea)
- Hyundai Heavy Industries (South Korea)
- Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (South Korea)
- China Merchants Heavy Industry (China)
These shipyards have extensive experience in building CNG tankers and use advanced engineering and construction techniques to ensure that these vessels meet the high safety and performance standards required for the transport of compressed natural gas.
Number of Active Vessels
As of 2023, there are several dozen CNG tankers in operation around the world, with many more under construction or on order. The exact number of active vessels can vary depending on market conditions and demand for CNG transport services.
