Disposal of tank washings

Tank washing is very important, as it removes all the oil leftovers, the chemical substances and because of this it becomes crucial to dispose all these residues, slops and polluted water to be disposed in a proper way. Slops are commercial wastes which are caused by vessel’s services which mainly include tank washings and refinement of fuel. There are slop tanks designed in a vessel in order to store the leftovers from tank washings. This should be done very properly as there are two different slops one is from oil and one is from chemical so while washing this should be kept in mind and accordingly slop tank should be managed. There are certain restrictions for these slop tanks, if the vessel is big then it can have 2 slop tanks. But these slop tanks get filled easily, and according to the MARPOL Annex II, if this slop is disposed in the water, it could be very dangerous so for this there should be shore reception facilities. They are taken at the port and, in most cases, burnt, resulting in a financial and ecological flow sheet that could be better. Barges can also prove to be useful in this. The dumping of this slop is very expensive which is to be done with the shore reception facilities and hence it is necessary that there is an earlier contract done regarding these expenses. Because of this cost issue there are various problems regarding this but there are developing technologies where this slop can turn into fuel and which could be helpful and also could play major role in sustainability.
