Hanwha Ocean, a prominent South Korean shipbuilder, has recently delivered the HMM Ruby, a state-of-the-art LNG-ready containership, to the country's leading shipping firm, HMM. This milestone was announced by HMM via social media on June 24, marking the vessel's readiness to commence operations on the PSX route, linking South Korea with the United States, starting from June 25.Named after July's birthstone, HMM Ruby is the seventh in a series of twelve LNG-ready 13,000 TEU containerships ordered by HMM from Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2021.

Each vessel, built under this agreement, incorporates advanced energy-saving technologies designed to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Moreover, these ships feature LNG-ready configurations, enabling potential future conversion to LNG propulsion systems.The inaugural ship from this series, HMM Garnet, was previously delivered by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in January 2024. Upon completion of all twelve vessels later this year, HMM's total fleet capacity is anticipated to reach 1 million TEUs, with containerships exceeding 10,000 TEUs constituting 80% of the fleet. Hyundai Glovis, the shipping and logistics arm of South Korea's Hyundai Kia Automotive Group, has commissioned Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China to build six additional ultra-large car carriers. These vessels, featuring LNG dual-fuel technology and a capacity of 10,800 car equivalent units (CEU), will expand the CSSC-affiliated yard's project backlog. This order follows HMM's similar request last year for six vessels chartered by Hyundai Glovis, marking them as the largest car carriers on order to date.

Earlier this year, Seoul-based Hyundai Glovis announced a significant investment of approximately $750 million for the construction of six new car carriers, scheduled for delivery in 2028. This move aligns with the company's strategy to expand its owned and chartered fleet to approximately 110 car carriers by 2027. This expansion plan includes newbuilds from HMM and additional chartered-in tonnage from Seaspan, which ordered six 10,800 CEU vessels from Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding. GSI, with the latest Hyundai Glovis order, has now secured contracts for a total of 39 car carriers, solidifying its leading position in the industry.
