Japanese shipping giant Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) has taken delivery of its latest vessel, the LNG-fueled car carrier Nereus Highway. This 7,000 CEU capacity ship, constructed by China Merchants Jinling Shipbuilding (Jiangsu), represents a significant milestone as the first LNG-powered vessel built by the Chinese shipyard for K Line. The order, initially placed in September 2021, marks a strategic advancement in K Line's commitment to environmentally sustainable shipping practices.

The vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel, electronically controlled WinGD 7X62DF-2.1 engine, designed to minimize methane emissions while operating on LNG.The adoption of LNG as a primary fuel is a critical element in reducing the environmental impact of maritime operations. When compared to conventional heavy fuel oil, LNG offers a reduction in CO2 emissions by 25% to 30%, virtually eliminates sulfur oxides (SOx), and decreases nitrogen oxides (NOx) by approximately 75%, ensuring compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) stringent NOx Tier 3 regulations. This delivery underscores K Line’s ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability within the global shipping industry.

Cape Hayate, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel bulk carrier, has been delivered to Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) by Japan Marine United at their Tsu shipyard. The vessel, delivered on May 30, 2024, boasts a length of nearly 300 meters, a width of 50 meters, a draft of 18 meters, and a deadweight tonnage of 210,000. Classified by ClassNK, Cape Hayate will sail under the Japanese flag.Cape Hayate marks a significant milestone as the first Capesize bulk carrier in K Line's fleet to feature a dual-fuel diesel engine utilizing LNG as its primary fuel.

K Line anticipates that using LNG will reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 25-30%, sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions by nearly 100%, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by approximately 75%, aligning with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) Tier III NOx regulations. The vessel is equipped with the 7X62DF-2.1 iCER dual-fuel electronic control engine, developed by WinGD, designed to minimize methane slip during LNG operation. Furthermore, K Line intends to enhance the vessel's environmental performance by installing Seawing, an automated kite system harnessing wind power, to further its commitment to carbon-free technology.
