Norwegian shipping company Hagland Shipping has entered into an agreement with Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes for the construction of four methanol-ready self-discharging bulk carriers. The 5,000 dwt vessels are designed with several innovations aimed at significantly reducing emissions. Notably, the ships will feature an engine configuration that can be converted to methanol operation in the future.According to Hagland Shipping, these new bulk carriers are expected to achieve a reduction in CO2 emissions by 40-50% and NOx emissions by 90-95% compared to the oldest vessels in their current fleet. This represents a substantial advancement in the company's commitment to environmental sustainability.
The total investment for these new vessels exceeds NOK 800 million ($75.6 million), marking the largest single investment in Hagland Shipping's history. This ambitious project has garnered support from the fleet renewal program for shortsea shipping. The first of these self-discharging bulk carriers is anticipated to be delivered and join the fleet by the end of 2025. All four vessels will operate under the Norwegian flag. This development follows Hagland Shipping's recent expansion in November, when the company took delivery of the last of three new hybrid bulk carriers from Royal Bodewes. Initially, Hagland had contracted the Dutch shipbuilder for two battery-hybrid bulk carriers but opted to acquire an additional 5,000 dwt bulk carrier in February 2022.
