Cyprus-based shipping company Lemissoler Navigation has initiated a significant move in the maritime industry by placing an order for methanol dual-fuel ultramax vessels at Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, affiliated with CSSC in Guangzhou. This marks China shipbuilding's inaugural venture into this specific segment. The agreement encompasses the construction of four firm 65,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) units, each valued at over $40 million, along with options for an additional four vessels.
Under the leadership of Philippos Philis, Lemissoler Navigation unveiled its methanol-fueled ultramax concept in collaboration with Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI) and ABS in December of the preceding year. Established in 1996 in Limassol, the company boasts a fleet consisting of 12 eco supramax and ultramax bulkers constructed between 2015 and 2020. This latest order signifies Lemissoler's first acquisition since 2017. Historically, Japanese shipbuilder Tsuneishi has been favored for methanol-powered bulker construction. However, Chinese shipyards such as Wuhu, Chengxi, and Nantong Xiangyu have also secured contracts for methanol-ready units.
