Maersk has announced the conclusion of its fleet renewal plan for 2024 by signing agreements with three shipyards for the construction of 20 advanced container vessels featuring dual-fuel engines. These vessels, with a collective capacity of 300,000 TEU, mark a significant step in Maersk’s commitment to modernizing its fleet with sustainable technologies.

The newbuilding orders are distributed across three shipyards in China and South Korea. Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China will construct eight vessels, including two with a capacity of 9,000 TEU and six with a capacity of 17,000 TEU. Hanwha Ocean in South Korea and New Times Shipbuilding in China will each build six 15,000 TEU vessels. All the vessels are equipped with advanced liquefied gas dual-fuel propulsion systems, enabling enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.

This order aligns with Maersk’s fleet renewal strategy, first outlined in its August 2024 update, and reinforces the company’s focus on sustainable growth in the maritime industry. The diverse range of vessel sizes, spanning from 9,000 TEU to 17,000 TEU, ensures flexibility in global operations while adhering to stricter environmental regulations. The dual-fuel technology underscores Maersk’s commitment to advancing cleaner shipping solutions as it transitions toward a more sustainable future.
