COSCO Shipping Lines has commissioned the construction of six advanced 13,600 TEU containerships, each equipped with exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers), from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding. The contract signing took place on October 28, 2024, with representatives from China Shipbuilding Trading, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, and COSCO Shipping Lines in attendance.
Each vessel is projected to cost $150 million, bringing the total investment to $900 million. Deliveries are scheduled for 2027, marking a significant enhancement to COSCO’s fleet in terms of both capacity and environmental compliance. Hudong-Zhonghua has taken the lead in the design and development of this ship type, showcasing a focus on independent innovation within the Chinese shipbuilding sector.
The new vessels are engineered to meet rigorous operational and environmental standards, with specifications including an overall length of 336 meters, a beam of 51 meters, and a draft of 30.2 meters. This order underscores COSCO's commitment to expanding its fleet with modern, eco-friendly containerships that align with international sustainability standards. The investment reflects the growing trend among global shipping companies toward cleaner technologies and energy-efficient vessels.
