The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) is an organization within the United States Navy that is responsible for the acquisition, design, development, and maintenance of the Navy's ships, submarines, and combat systems. It is one of the Navy's five system commands and is headquartered at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. NAVSEA manages the life-cycle of the Navy's ships and systems, from the initial acquisition phase through the in-service phase, and ultimately to the decommissioning phase. The command also provides technical and logistical support to the fleet and conducts research and development on new technologies to improve the Navy's capabilities.
he Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) operates four public shipyards, these shipyards are responsible for maintaining and repairing the Navy's fleet of ships and submarines. These shipyards are:
Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Virginia
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine
Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Hawaii
Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Washington
In addition to these four shipyards, NAVSEA also manages and oversees a number of private shipyards and other facilities that perform work on Navy ships and submarines.morehide
