The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) is one of the four public shipyards operated by the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). It is located in Kittery, Maine, and has a long and storied history dating back to the 18th century.
PNSY was established in 1800 as the first federal shipyard in the United States. It was originally called the Portsmouth Navy Yard and was used to build and repair ships for the US Navy during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. In 1827, the shipyard was renamed the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
