Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), an Indian shipyard under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence, has announced a diversification of its offerings. GRSE has signed a $45 million agreement with Germany’s Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler for the construction of four 120-meter-long, 7,500 dwt multipurpose vessels. The agreement also includes an option to build an additional four ships.GRSE is traditionally recognized for its expertise in defence shipbuilding and the construction of offshore vessels. This move marks a significant step towards expanding its presence in the commercial shipbuilding sector.

The agreement with Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler reflects a growing trend among Indian shipyards to enhance their capabilities in commercial shipbuilding. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set an ambitious goal for the nation to become a top five shipbuilding and repair hub within the next decade. Despite currently being outside the top 10 shipbuilding nations globally, with a market share of less than 1%, India is making concerted efforts to boost its shipbuilding industry.GRSE’s latest venture is a strategic alignment with the Prime Minister’s vision, demonstrating the country's commitment to expanding its shipbuilding capacity and improving its standing in the global market.
