On July 30, 2024, South Korean shipping giant HMM announced the addition of a new LNG-ready 13,000 TEU containership to its fleet. The vessel, named HMM Pearl, was constructed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) and is set to commence operations shortly. The 335-meter-long HMM Pearl is the sixth vessel in a series of twelve 13,000 TEU containerships commissioned by HMM in 2021. The series is being constructed by two Korean shipbuilders, Hanwha Ocean and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with each yard responsible for six vessels. The first vessel of this series, HMM Garnet, was delivered by HHI in January 2024, followed by the recent delivery of HMM Ruby by Hanwha Ocean.
These state-of-the-art vessels are equipped with advanced energy-saving technologies designed to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The ships are also built with LNG-ready structures, allowing for future conversion to LNG propulsion, thereby aligning with HMM’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices.Upon the completion of the twelve-vessel series within this year, HMM’s fleet capacity is expected to reach 1 million TEUs. Significantly, containerships exceeding 10,000 TEU will constitute 80% of the company's fleet, optimizing cost structures and operational efficiency. This strategic expansion underscores HMM’s dedication to maintaining a competitive edge in the global shipping industry.
