HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE), a leading shipyard in South Korea, has announced a significant contract valued at 340.3 billion won ($244.7 million) to construct two very large gas carriers. The agreement, secured with an Asian shipping company, was disclosed in a regulatory filing on Monday, Novemebr 18.The vessels will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, one of HD KSOE’s three shipbuilding subsidiaries, and are scheduled for delivery by December 2027. This latest contract adds to the company's robust performance in 2024.

HD KSOE has already surpassed its annual order target of $13.5 billion, securing contracts for 177 ships worth a total of $19.8 billion to date. This achievement underscores the company's strong position in the global shipbuilding market and its ability to consistently secure high-value projects. The latest order further solidifies its leadership in constructing advanced, large-scale gas carriers.

 

 

CMA CGM Secures LNG Vessels Order in South Korea

CMA CGM is reportedly the European company behind a substantial ship order placed in South Korea. On July 15, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Hyundai Samho announced a significant contract valued at $2.67 billion for the construction of 12 LNG dual-fueled 15,500 TEU vessels. According to brokers, these ships are being built for CMA CGM.The order is evenly split between the two shipyards, with each yard responsible for six newbuilds, all scheduled for delivery by 2028.

This substantial order increases CMA CGM's newbuild backlog to over 1 million TEU slots, positioning the company second only to Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) in terms of fleet expansion. With this addition, CMA CGM is on course to surpass Maersk in the global liner rankings, marking a significant shift in the maritime shipping industry.This move underscores CMA CGM's commitment to expanding its fleet with environmentally friendly, LNG-fueled vessels, aligning with global trends towards sustainability in shipping. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has secured a substantial contract valued at 631.9 billion won ($466.4 million) to construct four very large ammonia carriers (VLAC) for a European client. According to a regulatory filing made on Tuesday, the VLAC vessels will be manufactured at the facilities of Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, with a scheduled delivery set for July 2028. Notably, the identity of the European shipper has not been disclosed by the company.

 This achievement further underscores HD Korea Shipbuilding's successful year, as it has already garnered orders for 86 vessels, totaling $9.86 billion. These orders represent an impressive 73 percent of the company's yearly target of $13.5 billion. The diverse range of vessels ordered includes liquefied natural gas carriers, petrochemical carriers, liquefied petroleum gas and ammonia carriers, among others. HD Korea Shipbuilding operates as a subsidiary of the prominent shipbuilding, oil refining, and machinery conglomerate, HD Hyundai. It oversees three domestic entities: HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. This latest contract underscores the company's position as a key player in the global shipbuilding industry.
